FREE ADMISSION

(This is a family friendly event… Kids are welcome too!)

We are super-stoked to announce the next Fast Forward Austin event, The Difference Engine, featuring Graham Reynolds, HUB New Music, Density512,  One Ounce Opera, and Corps Multiple. With fiercely focused performances and gripping narratives, this show is going to be a wild ride and It’s all going down at one of Austin’s tastiest venues for new music, 4th Tap Brewing Co-op.

At the core of this year’s event is a performance of Graham Reynolds’ groundbreaking work The Difference Engine in collaboration with Austin’s own Density 512 and Boston-based HUB New Music. Hailed by the London Independent as “the quintessential modern composer” Reynolds is a cornerstone of Austin’s new music scene and The Difference Engine is an epic showcase of his diverse compositional voice. This massive work delves deep into the complex mind of mathematician Charles Babbage, who is credited with originating the concept of a digital programmable computer in the early 1800’s.

With its unique instrumentation of flute, clarinet, violin, and cello, the ensemble of “intrepids” (WQXR, New York), HUB New Music has been praised for performances of adventurous repertoire that are “gobsmacking and perfectly played” (Cleveland Classical), with The Boston Globe encouraging audiences to “go, listen, and be changed.” In addition to their collaboration with Density 512, HUB will be presenting an exciting program of works written for them by some of today’s most innovative composers.

There is a movement to revitalize opera across the globe, but no one is doing it quite like One Ounce Opera. From premiering a Frankenstein-esque vaudevillian operetta in a Hyde Park living room, to rogue bits of Verdi in a Red River club, One Ounce Opera presents opera as accessible, contemporary, and mainstream through thoughtful programming in non-traditional locations.

One Ounce Opera will be reprising their American premiere of DOOR, directed by its librettist, dramaturg Daniel Solon. Composed by rising star Rhiannon Randle, this powerful short opera takes us on a gripping journey through claustrophobia, relationship breakdown, depression, and escapism.

Continuing with the theme of early innovation in computer science, One Ounce Opera is also teaming up with Density 512 to present composer Kenneth Froehlich‘s Finite Differences, which tells the story of Ada Lovelace, recognized by many as the world’s first computer programmer.

Co-founded by Sandie Donzica and François Minaux, Corps Multiple strives to give equal voice to different types of art forms through multi-disciplinary performances. Their project (UN)ROOTED opens the discussion on the deep need for belonging, roots, pairs and marks, inherent to human kind. This flexibly fascinating work will be presented in between sets.
