Currently the Graduate Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the quartet members are pursuing Doctorates in Chamber Music Performance under the guidance of the Chiara String Quartet.

Founded in 2010, Skyros received Masters in Chamber Music Performance from the University of Texas at Austin Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music, mentored by the Miró Quartet and Sandy Yamamoto.

In summer 2013, the Skyros Quartet will travel nationally and internationally. The quartet just returned from China, performing in Xi’an and Hangzhou as part of an official delegation from the University of Nebraska system. Skyros performed at Xi’an Jiaotong University and Zhejiang University City College, as well as other venues during their two-week trip in May. They will tour the Pacific Northwest for three weeks in May and June, with funding from a Hixson-Lied Student Presentation of Scholarly/Creative Activity Grant. In addition, they will appear at the Deer Valley Music Festival Emerging Quartets and Composers Program with the Muir Quartet and Joan Tower in Deer Valley, UT in July and August.

The Skyros Quartet has concertized extensively in the Austin and Lincoln areas, as well as performing internationally. A recent performance highlight was the Mendelssohn Octet alongside the Chiara String Quartet for the Hixon-Lied Concert Series (Lincoln, NE) in September 2012. They have performed for the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Society (Ontario, Canada), the Sunflower Music Festival (Topeka, Kansas), the Meadowlark Music Festival (Lincoln, Nebraska), and the Kaleidoscope Concert Series (Austin, Texas). Skyros made up the core string section of the UT New Music Ensemble under the direction of Dan Welcher for its 2011-2012 season.

Strongly committed to education, Skyros instructs music in many capacities. They are currently Graduate Teaching Assistants at UNL in theory, chamber music, and outreach. At UT, they taught as faculty for the UT String Project. The Quartet also coached and led masterclasses for CHAMPS (Chamber Music in Public Schools), an Austin non-profit that provides free weekly coachings in public schools. The Skyros Quartet leads community-engagement programs, enabling them to inspire audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds. In Spring 2013, Skyros completed a series of thirteen outreach events for elementary schools in the Lincoln Public School district, and an interactive family concert experience at the Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach.

The Skyros Quartet takes its name from the Greek isle of Skyros, one of a quartet of islands in the Sporades of the Aegean Sea.

West Fourth New Music Collective

w4directorsWest Fourth New Music is a collective of composers and performers dedicated to presenting new live concert music. Based out of New York City, W4 makes a priority of programming and producing new music events with an eye toward bringing diverse audiences together through innovative concert experiences. Co-directors Matt Frey, Tim Hansen, Molly Herron, and Ruben Naeff met while studying in the graduate program of NYU’s Steinhardt School on West 4th Street in Manhattan. A mutual desire to produce their own work outside of the academic environment and to cultivate a broader audience for new music spurred the formation of W4.
